Five dead, 27 injured in Gairo crash

Morogoro. Five people died and 27 others were injured in an accident after the bus in which they were travelling in to Dodoma overturned in Gairo district along the Morogoro-Dodoma highway.
The accident occurred yesterday at around 11.20 AM.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander Leonce Rwegasira confirmed the accident.
Mr Rwegesira said the bus, owned by NBS Bus Services Limited, overturned after its driver lost control due to speeding.
He added that police have launched a manhunt for the driver (name withheld) who fled after the accident, but who he said is a resident of Igunga.
“According to some passengers, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to speeding; we are hunting for him,” the RPC told The Citizen over a telephone interview.
Mr Rwegasira said injured passengers are being treated at Berega hospital.
According to Mr Rwegasira, plans were underway to transfer to Morogoro regional hospital, the critically injured ones.
The RPC named the deceased as Mr Salmin Shaaban (aged between 40 and 50 years) a resident of Urambo and Mr Clement Mpondi (40-50) a resident of Igunga.
Four other people who include two women and a baby aged between four and nine months had not been identified by the time of going to press.
The bodies according to Mr Rwegasira are preserved at Morogoro regional hospital mortuary.
“I urge wananchi to go to the Morogoro Regional hospital to identify the bodies of those who were killed in the accident,” said the RPC.
