Dar es Salaam. The government has been accused of sabotaging the Opposition in its efforts to serve the public.
“The Central Government is deliberately trying to weaken mayors on Opposition tickets on implementing strategies. We are deeply concerned about the situation and relations between Ukawa [the Coalition of Defenders of the People’s Constitution] and the government are strained,” Kinondoni Municipal Council mayor Boniface Jacob bemoaned.
Ukawa encompasses Chadema, CUF, NCCR-Mageuzi and Tanzania League for Democracy.
In a statement on Friday, Mr Jacob said for society to develop, leaders at various levels and parties should cooperate.
He accused the Central Government of being uncooperative, warning that voters would be the losers since it would be difficult solve problems facing the city.
He said the aim was to turn people against the Opposition, which won more wards than the ruling party in the last civic polls.
He claimed he and fellow Opposition leaders believe that what is going on has the blessings of President John Magufuli.
He criticised an unnamed cabinet minister for threatening to stop mayors from using government vehicles.
“We thought things would be OK after elections, but that isn’t the case. What we are seeing are intrigues and machinations to block us from achieving our goals of serving wananchi.”
Mr Jacob said he was denied a permission to travel to South Africa where he was invited to attend a meeting by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) on funding the construction of the Mlalakuwa River banks from Goba through Makongo Juu and Kawe to the Indian Ocean.
According to Mr Jacob, ICLEI is funding similar projects in various African countries. “I missed the trip because the Chief Secretary delayed to permit me to travel. Other countries such as Zambia, Kenya and Ghana benefited from the grant.”
He said the permission was released after the end of the meeting and the Kinondoni Municipality missed Sh1.3 billion.
He said last week, Dar es Salaam opposition mayors were invited to youth unemployment talks in Turkey that would lead to the provision of funds for constructing a vocation training centre in the city.
He said the Turkish Embassy in Tanzania was facilitating the trip and that Sh88 million had already been used in preparing the journey.
“We were supposed to attend the meeting between June 16 and 19, this year, but the government blocked our trip. We don’t understand what is really going on,” said Mr Jacob.
He told the Central Government to clearly state its position regarding Opposition leaders.
