Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli yesterday sought to allay fears following the decision by the government to freeze employment and workers’ promotion and pay rise in the public service, giving the assurance that the move was only a stopgap measure that would take only two months.
Speaking publicly and for the first time on the suspension that has alarmed trade unionists and thousands of civil servants, the President said the move was not meant to disenfrenchise workers.
“The government that I lead will not in any way demoralise or neglect its employees. What we are doing is to sort out problems that we created by weeding out ghost employees and clean the payroll,” said President Magufuli who was speaking during a ceremony to mark 50 years of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT).
He said new public servants would thereafter continue to be recruited while those already in service will continue to be promoted as usual. “I plead that you understand us as not doing so will undermine our own efforts,” said the President who has championed a crackdown countrywide on ghost workers who were costing the government billions of shillings every month.
